babies and hospitals....

ever since nadia nasira turned one last march, we had been in and out of the hospital too many times that a whole two months simply slipped away without us realising it. first she had croup and she was admitted (in fact both mummy and daughter was), then a week later, she had tonsillitis and she got admitted again. since i cared for her, the virus had happily found the next victim in me for which i was admitted. during the hospital stay, i contracted conjunctivitis from god knows where. when we thought everything was over and came back to the hospital for nadia nasira’s follow-up. her pead was so happy with her progress and said she was perfectly alright.

to our dismay, nadia nasira started coughing the very next day!!!! i sighed to myself… is this a never ending story???!!!! she got worst the next day, or so we thought. we took her again to the hospital and again the next day, this time me alone. that was it!! her pead could not take it anymore with our ‘run to the pead at the first instance’ attitude and ended up giving me a long lecture about the danger in bringing the little girl to the hospital. he got upset because she was very fine on monday and he suspected that she could have picked up some virus each time we brought her to the hospital. he told me that i probably thought i was doing her a service by visiting a doctor but it doesn’t seem to be the case, i could be doing her more harm than good. he also added that he has given us enough medicine for us to keep and treat her at home after a phone call to him for simple fever and flu and cough and rashes and etc!!! only then i understood why he kept giving so much medicine after each visit as well as at the time we got discharged. so i went home, continued treating her at home, figuring out which medicine to give her with some advice from my doctor sister in law and my husband’s friend as well as our own instinct. she coughed less but i could hear some phlegm when she coughed.

i told myself enough is enough with all these drugs that is going into my daughter’s body. really sad to see her lose weight and lose her baby look and chubby cheeks. i told myself that i must resort to traditional medicine as well as preventive methods in caring for her. i followed my mum’s advice of using ‘chitterattai’ (a type of root) to treat her phlegm and the result was wonderful. i cut the root as small as a pepper, mix it with the hot water that i use to for her milk preparation. i gave it to her for three days, on the second day itself, she was ok. alhamdullillah.
